Social Media is a very broad term which is used to define a new way for people to communicate and share ideas and content via the web.  There are now thousands of social media sites Social Networking which can be B2B or B2C,  Social Review Sites, Media Sharing, Social Bookmarking and many lump Blogging into social media.  Social media is not for all businesses.  As with a website or any other online presence medium, you must know and understand your prospect.

If you are an industrial manufacturing site and someone has talked you into Twittering, it is a good bet this is probably a waste of your time.  On the other hand, it might be important that you have a company page on LinkedIn® and your executives and sales people have a profile.  In some cases especially many B2C companies, not utilizing Twitter®, Facebook®, and many of the other social media sites such as coupon sites, might keep you from getting access to clientele you might otherwise want.
